We are Mafalda & Francisco – Portuguese who consider ourselves citizens of the world. As two curious souls who love to be challenged and blown away, travel was a natural passion for us. We love to try and see new things!
Since we didn’t get the chance in our college years, the urge to discover the world kept growing while we began our “grown up lives”. In 2020, when the pandemic hit, we quickly realized how much traveling means to us. Thus, we created our Instagram channel – @bookmeaflight – and started showing off Portugal while we couldn’t travel around the globe.
When the pandemic rules softened, we got married and planned to move to Lisbon. Our goal was to head to a different destination every month while working remotely. And as soon as we had been presented with the opportunity to visit Bavaria, we thought about Rothenburg ob der Tauber. It’s so charming – we could spend all day dreaming about it.
A Magical Day in Rothenburg ob der Tauber
On our trip, we stayed for a day – wandering around its picturesque streets, eating pretzels, trying schneeballs from Brot & Zeit, visiting the Christmas Museum and taking photos. We can’t wait to return one day to check out the Christmas Markets. It must be even more magical at that time of year!
We spent a whole day in Rothenburg ob der Tauber and believe we could have spent a few more days soaking up the unique atmosphere. We felt like it had a lot more to offer and we saw some really stunning hotels and B&Bs around town. These will definitely be kept in mind for a future visit.
Why Rothenburg ob der Tauber is So Special
Rothenburg ob der Tauber is like a village from another time or something out of a fairytale. All the houses are lovely and very well preserved. It’s a safe destination too, and it honestly reminds us a little bit about Christmas time due to its aesthetic and ambiance. Visiting Rothenburg ob der Tauber was definitely one of the big highlights of our Bavaria trip.
The one place in town that stood out to us the most was the German Christmas Museum. It’s massive and full of beautiful, detailed Christmas related must-haves and accessories. The museum is a must-see. We didn’t expect to be transported to a different time of year yet it felt heartwarming.
How to Reach Rothenburg ob der Tauber
For us, the best way to reach the town was by car since we were on a road trip through Bavaria and had places marked in the map that were a bit far away from each other. A car was a nice option in our case. It was easy to drive around and we found some good parking spots right at Rothenburg ob der Tauber’s entrance. But it’s also possible and easy to catch a train or bus from Munich, Stuttgart or Frankfurt.
What You Need to Know Before You Go
You should know that Christmas is an important time here. Rothenburg ob der Tauber gives you the Christmas Holiday feeling you need. It’s a wonderful experience and something that would be taken to the next level in winter. If we went now, we would book this trip for the holidays.
