Setting off on a motorhome adventure? A motorhome holiday can be an incredible experience and it is easy to see why so many people have purchased motorhomes in recent times, but you will always want to make sure that the vehicle is in good condition before you hit the road so that you can reduce the chance of encountering a problem that ruins your adventure. Here are a few of the main checks to make in advance of your trip.
Tyre Pressure & Tread Depth
You always want to make sure that your tyres are in good condition before hitting the road. Due to the weight of these vehicles, the tyres can suffer and deteriorate faster than a regular car. You should check the tyre pressure and top up to the recommended level as well as check the tread depth – 1.6mm is the legal minimum amount, but it is usually recommended that you change the tyres at around 3mm.
Fluid Levels
You also want to check the vehicle’s various fluid levels and top these up to the recommended amount to keep the motorhome running smoothly at all times. The main fluids to check include:
- Engine oil
- Coolant
- Windscreen washer fluid
- Power steering fluid
Battery & Lights
The battery will power all of the electrical components and these will be key for an enjoyable trip, so you want to test the battery health in advance of your trip so that you do not have electrical issues. You also want to check all of the interior and exterior lights to ensure that they are working.
Tools & Emergency Kit
You also need to make sure that you have a toolkit in the vehicle in case you have any trouble on the road. Similarly, a fully stocked emergency kit is essential – hopefully, you will not have to use it, but it is better to be safe than sorry.
Documents for Travel
You do not want to get caught out without the proper documentation for your trip, so you should put together a folder as well as have digital copies stored on your phone. This will include things like your driver’s license, passport, visas (if needed), pet passports and motorhome insurance paperwork in case you have any issues on your trip.
These are the main checks to make before setting off on a motorhome adventure and will hopefully allow for a successful and memorable trip. It is always a smart idea to perform these checks well in advance of your trip in case you have any problems that need to be resolved before you hit the road.
A motorhome holiday can be a great way to travel and explore new places, but you need to make sure that the vehicle is in tip-top condition to reduce the chances of an issue.
