Hi, I’m Jake and welcome to my Milford Sound guide! I hail from the Sunshine State of Australia and spent my early years in the town of Rockhampton before venturing to the Sunshine Coast at 19 to chase my dream of playing rugby league. In 2022, I had the chance to explore New Zealand and, like many, I drove to Milford Sound. However, I later realized that merely driving there didn’t do justice to the grandeur of this destination. Fast forward to October 2023, my fiance and I embarked on a South Island adventure in a motorhome. Along the way, we experienced the mesmerizing landscapes of Lake Tekapo, Lake Pukaki, Mt Cook, Hooker Valley Track, Wanaka, Isthmus Peak (where I popped the question!), Queenstown and Milford Sound.
Trying to convey the sheer beauty and raw magnificence of Milford Sound is challenging. It’s as if your visual perception is transcended. The scale of the place brought to mind scenes from Jurassic Park! When we reached the fiord, the boat tour became the highlight. As we sailed, our guide shared insights over the microphone – unveiling the secrets of this majestic spot. Milford Sound deserves a 10/10 rating. It stands as a must-visit destination for anyone exploring New Zealand. The untouched beauty of Milford Sound is unparalleled. The scale and rawness of the landscape make it an extraordinary experience, and the boat tour adds a layer of understanding for the natural wonders of this pristine location. Who to Book Your Milford Sound Cruise With
We booked our cruise with RealNZ.com. Since my fiance and I had a motorhome, we handled the logistics of getting there and back ourselves. While we didn’t require hotel pick-up, I would recommend leaving early for the drive as it’s quite a journey to reach Milford Sound. The cruise itself was remarkable, offering amazing views and insightful commentary, and I would recommend it for anyone exploring this stunning destination!
Where to Base Yourself for a Milford Sound Trip
To experience Milford Sound, Te Anau is considered the best town to base yourself in. It’s a two-hour drive from Te Anau to Milford Sound and the route offers even more beautiful scenery. Otherwise, if you can and have the transport, I would base myself in Queenstown for the night and make my way back there afterward to enjoy dinner at one of its restaurants.
What You Need to Know Before You Go
A journey to Milford Sound is like stepping into a dreamscape and I’ve got a few tips to make your visit even more magical. First off, timing is everything. This place is enchanting year-round but if you prefer tranquility, consider the less-crowded shoulder seasons. The weather here likes to play hide-and-seek, so pack layers and a rain jacket. If you’re driving from Te Anau relish the scenic route, ensure your vehicle is in top shape, and fill up in Te Anau since Milford Sound doesn’t have gas stations. Lastly, book your cruise in advance and don’t forget your camera to capture the landscapes!
