Seattle is an interesting city that offers plenty to do. But when you’ve visited Pike Place Market and seen the Space Needle, you might want to do something a bit more active. Plenty of people like to be on the move when they’re exploring somewhere new, and there’s a lot of opportunity to do this in and around Seattle. The city and surrounding parts of Washington state are perfect for anyone who likes to see the outdoors, try out new activities, and experience new places in unique ways. If you want to get active in (or near) Seattle, take a look at these ideas.
Get on the Water
Seattle lies on Puget Sound and is surrounded by water. That makes any water-based activities top choices for an active vacation. Kayaking is a popular option, whether you choose to go out on the ocean or you prefer a calmer lake like Green Lake. Paddleboarding is another paddlesport that has a lot of local fans. You’ll find experiences where you can get out on the water with a guide or instructor. Or, if you’re more confident and have some experience, you can simply hire the equipment you need. There are lots of spots for these types of activities around the city.
Go Hiking
Hiking is an activity you can pursue around the US, but Washington is a particularly good place if you’re looking for miles of trails. No matter how fit you are or what level of difficulty you’re looking for, you’re sure to find a hike that suits your needs. Discovery Park is a great place to start with almost 12 miles of walking trails to explore. Mount Si is a popular hike if you’re looking for a peak to climb or, if you want to go even higher, Mount Rainier is an active volcano just 2.5 hours from Seattle.
Get on a Bike
If you prefer to be on two wheels than two legs, there are plenty of places to ride a bike in and around Seattle too. The Burke-Gilman Trail is a fantastic way to see some of the city, offering 27 miles around the northern neighborhoods. Or if you’re looking for a big event to take part in, consider the Seattle to Portland ride. This big event has been going since 1979, with more than 10,000 bikers taking part. The full ride is about 200 miles, with most people doing it in 2 days but some attempting it in one.
Head to the Slopes
During the winter, there are still plenty of things to do outdoors close to Seattle. In a couple of hours, you can drive to one of the nearby resorts that are perfect for skiing, snowboarding and other snow sports. Stevens Pass has 52 named runs, and you can even go skiing at night there. Crystal Mountain Resort not only has opportunities for skiers and snowboarders, but you also get there by gondola and you’ll find the highest restaurant in the state at the top.
You can find amazing activities to keep you moving when you visit Seattle and Washington state. Experience the area in your own way.
