Istanbul has been a major commercial and administrative center for over 1000 years. It served as the capital of the Byzantine Empire, as well as the Ottoman Empire. So, you can expect to see many remnants from its 1000+ history. Hagia Sophia is one of the buildings you should see when you visit the city. It was initially built in the 500s AD as a Roman cathedral. The Ottomans would later turn it into a mosque when they took over the city. Other historic points of interest are the Suleymaniye Mosque, Topkapi Palace, Sultan Ahmet Camii (Blue Mosque), and Galata Tower.
