Hi travelers! Welcome to my guide on the best things to do in Koh Lanta. I’m from Cumbria, England, and recently completed my degree. This spurred me to do some traveling! As I was growing up, my parents loved to travel and I’ve been to many places with them. I’m lucky that my parents always encouraged me to head overseas to have exciting new experiences.
I chose Southeast Asia as my recent trip for many reasons but especially the weather, food, culture and people. I visited Indonesia a few years ago and loved it, so I wanted to explore the region in more detail. It’s also great that the prices are low, which meant I could travel for longer and see more. I’ve also seen some places on social media which looked amazing and persuaded me to go. I’m going to Australia next too and can’t wait!
My Experience in Koh Lanta
I found out about Koh Lanta when planning my Thailand route. I started my trip in Koh Lipe, in the south and close to Malaysia, and the next island to get to was Koh Lanta! After researching the island I added it to my itinerary because of the gorgeous beaches, boat trips and laid back vibe.
We stayed in Koh Lanta for three nights. Every evening we would head to the beach to relax with a drink and watch the sunset. On our first day we did the 4 Islands Tour: snorkeling at Koh Chuek and Koh Ma, swimming through the Emerald Cave at Koh Mook and lunch at Koh Ngai. The following day we hired a moped to explore the island and after that we went to Long Beach. We ate at Thai Smile Bungalows too which was great!
I really enjoyed my stay at Koh Lanta as it has great beaches and activities, and you can truly relax. Compared to other islands, there isn’t much of a nightlife scene like Koh Phi Phi or Koh Phangan – so partygoers should keep that in mind before coming! Koh Lanta is also quite big – renting a moped is useful to explore the island. Like other Thai islands, there are plenty of choices for boat trips to nearby islands and other excursions.
9 Best Things To Do in Koh Lanta
1. Book the 4 Island Boat Tour
The 4 Island Tour is an epic journey that allows you to immerse yourself in the beauty of the Andaman Sea! The adventure begins with underwater wonders – snorkeling at Koh Chuek and Koh Ma. Next up is the mystical Emerald Cave of Koh Mook where a unique swim under a cave leads to a hidden lagoon surrounded by towering cliffs. The cherry on top of the experience is savoring a delicious lunch on the pristine sandy shores of Koh Ngai, as turquoise waters lap on the beach and hornbills fly around you.
2. Hire a Moped Scooter to Explore the Island
Exploring Koh Lanta becomes an adventure with a rented moped, a must-do experience while on the island. For approximately 250 baht per day, a scooter offers the freedom to effortlessly discover the island’s beautiful beaches and captivating lookout points. You can feel the wind in your hair and sun on your face as you soak up the natural beauty around you.
3. Go Snorkeling in the Crystal Clear Waters
Whether on a boat tour to Koh Ha and Koh Rok or from one of Koh Lanta’s beaches, there are plenty of opportunities for a good snorkeling experience here. The marine life in Koh Lanta is abundant and colorful, and much of it is still in good condition – so it’s definitely one of the highlights of visiting!
4. Swim Through the Emerald Cave of Koh Mook
My favorite place in the Koh Lanta region was the Emerald Cave at Koh Mook, a place I visited on the 4 Island Tour. Here, we had to swim through a 80 meter cave which was pitch black at points. The cave led us to a secret lagoon surrounded by towering green cliffs and an epic opening.
5. Eat at Thai Smile Bungalows & Restaurant
If you’re searching for a place to eat, I can recommend the restaurant at Thai Smile Bungalows. This place is so highly rated that it gained the Travellers’ Choice 2023 award with Tripadvisor. The food is delicious, the service is outstanding, the atmosphere is lovely and the location is nice.
6. Pay a Visit to the Koh Lanta Old Town
Koh Lanta’s Old Town offers a charming escape from the island’s beaches, showcasing a blend of traditional Thai and Chinese architecture. You can wander through the narrow lanes, adorned with vibrant murals and wooden houses, and savor local cuisine at waterfront restaurants. This cultural gem provides a serene and authentic experience for travelers.
7. Watch the Sunset at a Beach Bar
Sunset is a special time in Koh Lanta as the golden hour glow over the Andaman Sea is spectacular! What makes it more special is the chance to savor the scene at beach bars scattered across the island. You can sit on a bean bag, order a pizza and sip a cocktail while admiring the views.
8. Relax and Unwind at Long Beach
Long Beach is a golden stretch of sand on the west coast, renowned for its stunning sunsets and crystal clear waters. Offering a perfect blend of relaxation and water activities – visitors can enjoy snorkeling, kayaking and beachside massages. Easily accessible by moped, this idyllic destination boasts a laid-back atmosphere and a range of resort accommodations!
9. Get Yourself a Relaxing Thai Massage
Indulging in a Thai massage in Koh Lanta is a rejuvenating escape for an hour or two. Set against the backdrop of serene beaches and lush landscapes, skilled therapists apply ancient techniques to alleviate stress and tension. The therapeutic touch – coupled with the island’s tranquility – creates a blissful experience, promoting relaxation and well-being.
Where to Stay in Koh Lanta
I stayed at Baan Check In. It was a bungalow with a hammock at the front to relax in the gardens, was a two minute walk to the beach, and it had lots of restaurants nearby and a 7-Eleven across the road. I have also been recommended Blanco Hostel in Koh Lanta as it has a pool and is social for travelers to meet other people. Both places would be great options.
How to Get to Koh Lanta
Koh Lanta can easily be reached by boat. We arrived from Koh Lipe – it was quite an expensive journey which cost around 1500 baht per person. You can also get to Koh Lanta from Koh Phi Phi which costs around 450 baht. Other routes include going from Phuket or Krabi, again by boat.
Final Tips for Visiting Koh Lanta
You should visit Koh Lanta if you’re looking for a relaxing time but still want to do some exploring as well. The best time to visit is in the dry season, from January to April. If you can drive a moped confidently, I would suggest hiring one. You’ll save money on taxis and can see more of the island!
