Hi travelers! My name is Izabelle and in this article I’ll be highlighting the top 10 things to do in Itacare! I’m from a beautiful city in Espirito Santo called Guarapari but I currently live on the Gold Coast. It had been a while since I felt compelled to live abroad, and I chose the Gold Coast because of its climate and incredible natural beauty. Moreover, this part of Australia is in close proximity to Asia – a continent I really want to explore!
I can’t remember my life without travel. As a child my parents were in the habit of traveling and this transmitted to me, becoming a passion. So far, I’ve visited 13 countries and 17 Brazilian states. One destination in Brazil that I absolutely love is Itacare – a place I’d like to call my home in the future. I’ve been there six times now and adore spending time at its beaches.
The ideal itinerary for Itacare is at least seven days in order to slowly experience each attraction. In addition to boasting beautiful beaches and waterfalls, the nightlife in Pituba is a delight. The vibe in Bahia just hits different! You really feel at home here. What I love most about Itacare is the variety of things to do. From the beaches to the waterfalls, there is something for every taste and budget, as the prices are super affordable.
The sunset in Itacare is one of the most spectacular in the country and everyday gives you something new to look forward to. Being here also gives you easy access to other incredible places such as Serra Grande and Marau. My favorite place in Itacare is Jeribucacu Beach. Everything about it is special: the meeting of the river and sea, mangroves, preserved nature and eating grilled fish made on the beach. There’s nothing better!
Top 10 Things To Do in Itacare
1. Spend the Day at Jeribucacu Beach
The allure of Jeribucacu Beach lies not only in the sun-kissed shores but in the walk that precedes it. The lengthy stroll unveils pure nature, leading you through lush landscapes and unveiling glimpses of coastal bliss along the way. Here, the reward is soft sand beneath your feet, warm waters washing over you and endless palm trees for your eyes to behold. The cherry on top of this visit is savoring a grilled fish lunch by the shoreline.
2. Visit Prainha and Sao Jose Beaches
When visiting Itacare, make sure to include Prainha and Sao Jose beaches in your itinerary. Prainha, although devoid of facilities, offers a tranquil escape surrounded by pristine nature. Ensure you pack essentials like water and snacks for a day of undisturbed relaxation in this untouched coastal haven. On the other hand, Sao Jose beach provides a contrasting experience as it’s home to a high-end restaurant that you can dine at.
3. Walk Along the Trilha das 4 Praias
This coastal trail reveals the natural beauty of four paradisiacal beaches. As you traverse the rocky path, each step showcases a new vista, capturing the essence of Itacare’s coastline. The trail connects Engenhoca, Havaizinho, Camboinha and Itacarezinho beaches – offering a diverse spectrum of landscapes ranging from secluded coves to expansive sandy shores.
4. Check Out the Urban Beaches of Pituba
Easily accessible on foot, these urban oases beckon with their well-organized layouts and inviting atmospheres. Unlike remote shores, Pituba’s beaches boast a more structured environment with a variety of restaurants nearby. Whether you seek a day of seaside relaxation or a taste of the local cuisine, the urban beaches of Itacare promise a memorable experience!
5. Explore the Waterfalls Surrounding Itacare
While the beaches of Itacare are breathtaking, you might wish to mix things up by exploring the waterfalls – increasing your sense of tranquility. In the nearby area, there are three waterfalls I recommend: Cachoeira da Usina, Cachoeira do Cleando and Cachoeira do Tijuipe. Each one presents a unique opportunity to connect with the raw beauty of Itacare!
6. Head to Pituba to Experience the Nightlife
Rua Pituba is a street that’s regarded as the heart of Itacare featuring an array of charming cobblestone paths, colorful and unique shops, and superb restaurants, cafes, bars and ice cream shops. It’s the perfect place to start the night with a cup of cocoa and then walk the streets to see what spots are the liveliest! Staying here overnight also elevates the experience.
7. Watch the Sunset at Ponta do Xareu
Ponta do Xareu is an idyllic place to conclude a day in Itacare. The ambiance is enhanced by the presence of a handful of charming bars that boast privileged vistas, allowing you to unwind and savor the moment to the maximum. Ponta do Xareu is situated on the left-hand side of Praia da Concha, so it can easily be accessed on foot from the beach.
8. Go on an Adventurous Rafting Tour
Rafting in Itacare offers an exhilarating blend of adrenaline-pumping adventure and breathtaking natural beauty. The landscapes of Itacare, with its dense rainforests and winding rivers, provide a stunning backdrop for this water activity. Navigating the intense rapids of the Contas River, adventurers are treated to an immersive experience in the heart of nature.
9. Take a Surf Lesson in Itacare
No trip to Itacare is complete without riding the waves! For novices, fear not, as Itacare has several surfing businesses – inviting you to carve your first wave with instructors guiding you. A dance between sea and surfer unfolds, epitomizing the town’s laid-back vibe. For the adventurous spirits seeking a taste of the ocean’s thrill, surfboard rentals are the best option.
10. Try the Artisanal Chocolates from Farms
Farmers in the region are known for producing high quality, 100% cocoa, artisanal chocolate. One of the best places to try this delicious treat is Vila Rosa Cacau e Cultura – a place that has already become a major tourist attraction in Itacare. Additionally, there are stores in the town itself that sell award-winning local chocolates . You can’t go wrong with any of them!
Accommodation Options in Itacare
The best area in Itacare is Pituba. By being here, you won’t need to take a car to go out at night and can also explore the central beaches on foot. For those on a budget, who prefer hostels, I can recommend Buddy’s. This is a great place to make new friends and there’s even the option to book private rooms. For Airbnb lovers, I suggest Sal! With unique architecture, fantastic service and a welcoming atmosphere – it’s a top choice in Itacare.
Best Way to Reach Itacare
For those traveling by plane, the closest airport is Ilheus (73 km). From there you can rent a car, or take a bus or transfer. I recommend Itacare Bahia Turismo as they also offer tours. For those who want to explore the region in detail and like the road, it’s possible to arrive in Salvador and from there go by car or bus to Itacare (250 km). Public transport works to get there, but the timetable and routes can be limited. The best option is to go by car!
Tips for Your Visit to Itacare
Staying in Itacare and relying on walking limits what you can do, since some beaches are far away. If you don’t want to rent a car, there’s always the option of booking tours with a local agency. In terms of the weather, it’s great all year round! I’ve been here in all seasons, and March and April tend to bring the most rain. Avoid those months if you can.
For those who love parties and atmosphere, the high season (December and January) is perfect. But keep in mind this is also when the prices rise. If you choose to visit Itacare in the quiet season, don’t worry – the beaches are even more paradisiacal! Whenever you decide to visit be sure to bring light beach clothes, sunscreen and a pair of sandals/flip flops. Thanks for reading! Feel free to follow more of my travels on Instagram at @belleav.
