Hi there! Welcome to my guide on the 10 best things to do in Cuba for first time visitors. My name is Bojana Matkovikj, and I’m a travel and lifestyle content creator based in Croatia but originally from Macedonia. My father used to work as a driver, so ever since I was a little girl I always traveled with him whenever I got the chance. That was where I got the travel bug.
As I grew older, I continued traveling with friends and my sister. The love for exploring new countries kept growing and, until this day, I have never stopped. You could say I’m an incurable travelholic. At one point in my life, I was going through tough times and I found distraction in sharing my photos on Instagram. People, to my surprise, reacted well to my posts and in a very short period I received a collaboration offer from a luxury hotel in Mexico. That’s when I realized that Instagram, besides being a distraction, could be something that I could take seriously and make a living out of.
So I upgraded my camera, started learning photography through YouTube tutorials (yes, I’m self-taught) and in no time things got serious. Now I have the privilege of working with tourism boards, hotels, airlines, brands, etc. You can follow me on Instagram at @zivot_lutalice for my travel content.
My Cuba Trip, Full of Surprises
I had been dreaming of celebrating my birthday in Cuba for some time. I always thought the way of living, dancing, smiles, rum, beaches, etc. would all be something that would make me happy and feel like I belong – and it did. We decided to visit Cuba for a month and it was a fantastic trip.
Cuba is pretty far from Croatia, so we wanted to take our time and explore it bit by bit. Unfortunately, Cuba had other plans for us. We got sick there and ended up in the ER with pretty serious lung infections. Also, our luggage got lost. So everything that could go wrong did. In the end, we were left with 10 days to explore. We still managed to see Trinidad, Guanayara National Park, Varadero and its surroundings, and Havana.
Why Cuba is Such an Amazing Country
Cuba is a special and authentic place. It’s unlike any other country I’ve visited and that’s what I love most about it. Cuba is not for people who are looking for luxury holidays but for those with open minds who are searching for authentic experiences in an unspoiled and forgotten country. It feels like time stands still there and is frozen in the pre-embargo era.
Despite the lack of basic necessities for living, the people are warm, friendly, smiling and dancing. They are a true reminder of how grateful we should be with what we have in life and how blessed we are with the lives we have. Also, I should mention that the beaches here are jaw dropping. The nature takes your breath away and the cities are as authentic as it gets, full of history. I actually can’t think of a single thing that I don’t love about Cuba.
Favorite Places in Cuba: Trinidad & Havana
Each place we saw in Cuba was beautiful and unique in its own way, but I have to admit that Trinidad was the most authentic of them all. Havana, on the other hand, is different from all the other places – it’s a vibrant city with a happy vibe and is a truly special place to be. Both destinations are special and are definitely must-sees if you’re visiting Cuba.
10 Best Things To Do in Cuba
1. Explore Havana in Depth
When in Havana, make sure to explore the city thoroughly. Start by riding in an oldtimer (vintage car), which will not only provide a unique mode of transport but also allow you to learn about the city’s rich history from a local guide. Enjoy a mojito at the famous La Bodeguita del Medio, the birthplace of this iconic drink, and try a daiquiri at Hemingway’s favorite bar, Floridita.
As you explore the city, visit the Old Square (Plaza Vieja) and soak in its historic ambiance. Spend time at Plaza de la Catedral, an example of Cuban baroque architecture, and head to Plaza de la Revolucion, a significant political and cultural landmark. For a taste of local life, hang out with the locals at the Malecon, a popular seaside promenade, and visit the Fabrica de Arte Cubano, a contemporary cultural center. Don’t miss the iconic landmarks such as El Capitolio, Havana’s grandiose government building, and the Cristo de la Habana, a large statue of Jesus overlooking the city.
Perhaps my favorite memory from Havana came when I met Louie, a musician, at the famous Malecon. He was playing the sax, and while I was walking there I sat next to him and we started talking. He then played a few songs for me. It was a truly special and touching moment that literally brought me to tears. I will always love Havana for this one memory.
2. Take a Day Trip to the Vinales Valley
Taking a day trip to Vinales is easily one of the best things to do in Cuba due to its stunning landscapes and rich cultural experiences. Located three hours from Havana, you can reach Vinales by bus, car or tour. The valley is famous for its tobacco farms, where you can learn about traditional cigar-making. Visitors can enjoy hiking or horseback riding through the lush landscape as well. The area is also known for its farm-to-table meals.
3. Hit Up the Beaches of Varadero
Visiting the beaches of Varadero is a fantastic experience in Cuba due to its pristine white sands and crystal-clear turquoise waters. Located on the Hicacos Peninsula, just a two-hour drive from Havana, Varadero offers a perfect tropical escape. The beaches are ideal for sunbathing, swimming, and water sports like snorkeling and scuba diving. Resorts and hotels line the coast, providing numerous amenities and all-inclusive options.
4. Check Out the Cenote Caves Near Varadero
Exploring the cenote caves near Varadero, such as Cueva de Saturno, is an exciting adventure. These underground wonders, just a short drive from Varadero, offer crystal-clear waters perfect for swimming and bathing. Cueva de Saturno is a stunning limestone cave with impressive stalactites and stalagmites, providing a unique and serene environment. The cool, fresh blue water is a refreshing escape from the heat.
5. Experience the Culture of Matanzas
Matanzas, or the “Athens of Cuba”, is a unique destination due to its rich cultural heritage and vibrant arts scene. Located two hours from Havana, this city is famous for its Afro-Cuban culture, music and poetry. Visitors can explore historical sites like the Sauto Theater and the Pharmaceutical Museum, as well as natural attractions such as the Cuevas de Bellamar and Rio Canimar (which you can visit on a boat). Matanzas is also the birthplace of the rumba dance. Its picturesque bay and well-preserved colonial architecture offer a tranquil and authentic experience.
6. Walk the Cobblestone Streets of Trinidad
Trinidad, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, offers a blend of history, culture and nature. Strolling through its cobblestone streets lined with colorful colonial buildings and visiting Plaza Mayor, the heart of the town, is a delightful introduction. Then you can explore the Museo Romantico for a glimpse into the past, hike in the nearby Topes de Collantes Nature Reserve to experience lush forests and majestic waterfalls, and cycle to Playa Ancon – a pristine beach boasting white sands and calm water to swim in.
7. See the Sights of Santa Clara
This city is known for the Che Guevara Mausoleum, where you can learn about the revolutionary leader’s legacy. Visitors can also check out Parque Vidal, the city’s central square, and head to the historic Tren Blindado site – a pivotal location in the Cuban Revolution. But Santa Clara is not just known for its history, it’s also a hub for arts and culture with many galleries, theaters and live music venues. The city’s youthful energy, driven by its large university student population, adds to its dynamic atmosphere.
8. Spend Some time in Cienfuegos
Cienfuegos, called the “Pearl of the South”, boasts stunning architecture and a seaside charm. The city, known for its French colonial influence, features the elegant Parque Jose Marti, surrounded by preserved buildings like the Palacio de Valle and the Tomas Terry Theatre. Strolling along the Malecon, a scenic waterfront promenade, or visiting the nearby botanical garden, one of the largest in Cuba, are some great ways to pass the time.
9. Chase Waterfalls at Guanayara National Park
Guanayara National Park offers travelers thrilling adventures amid lush natural beauty. Located in the Escambray Mountains, the park is ideal for hiking, with trails leading through tropical forests to serene waterfalls like “El Rocio”. The park’s rivers and natural pools provide refreshing spots for swimming, while birdwatchers can search for exotic species.
10. Book a Catamaran Tour to Cuba’s Islands
Last but not least, a catamaran tour to the surrounding islands is certainly one of the best things to do in Cuba. The enchanting Cayos Blancos, known as the “Island of Iguanas”, offers white sandy beaches and beautifully clear waters. As you sail, you might even get the chance to see dolphins.
Final Tips for Visiting Cuba
We were told that the food would be an issue in Cuba, and it kind of was, so we booked all-inclusive hotels. To be honest, they weren’t fantastic but they did the job okay. We booked the hotels through Stayforlong – a platform similar to Booking.com (which actually isn’t accessible in Cuba). The good thing about Stayforlong is that the longer you stay, the less you pay per night. Just lower your expectations for hotels and you should be fine.
When traveling through Cuba, try to hang with the locals and listen to their stories – they are full of interesting anecdotes. You can use “comunales” (shared taxis) to get around but be sure to bargain a bit as they often increase the prices for tourists. At first, I felt bad for doing this. But then I realized they earn more than me, and even more than doctors, so bargain with them for each ride. If you have the time, take some salsa classes. Above all, enjoy your trip – Cuba will evoke all of your feelings and senses.
