My name is Lucian Costea and I grew up and still live in Sibiu. This city is located in the Transylvania region of Romania about 140km from Brasov. Sibiu is a beautiful place and is worth visiting on any tour of Romania.
I’m 33 years old and work as a German – English translator. I discovered my passion for travelling just a few years ago. So far I’ve visited 14 counties (all in Europe) and hope to visit other continents in the future. I love travel because it lets me discover new places and experience different cultures.
I recently took a trip to Brasov with a friend who was visiting Romania from abroad. This city was on his bucket-list. I had already visited a few times but always enjoy going back because I love the place. It’s a great city with medieval architecture and is surrounded by the Carpathian Mountains.
Three Awesome Days in Brasov
I spent three days in Brasov. On the first day I went to Sinaia (an hour by train from Brasov) to visit the Peles Castle. This is one of the most beautiful castles in Europe. I’ve visited once before but this was the first time I went inside to take a look at the interior of the castle. It was absolutely gorgeous.
The Pelisor Castle is near the Peles Castle and is also worth visiting. While I was taking photos of the Pelisor Castle, heavy rain started to pour down and my umbrella became useless. All of a sudden the streets were flooded.
I took shelter under a bus stop but then had to walk through the rain to catch the train back to Brasov. I arrived a little bit wet! Then I spent the rest of the day exploring the historic center of Brasov and taking photos.
On the second morning, I took a bus to Bran to visit the Bran Castle. This castle became famous globally after it was linked to the legend of Dracula. After that, I came back to Brasov and went to the White Tower and Black Tower to enjoy the views of Brasov city center from above.
The final day was spent taking the cable car up Tampa Mountain where the famous BRASOV sign is located. From there you can see the entire city with an amazing view. It was a nice way to say goodbye to Brasov. Both my friend and I thoroughly enjoyed our three days in Brasov.
Favourite Place: Piata Sfatului
My favourite place in Brasov was Piata Sfatului (Council Square). I love the colourful houses here. Casa Sfatului looks great in the middle of the square. There is a fountain in the square that can also be used to take photos.
I took photos with the fountain in the frame. It’s a cool perspective. And of course the Tampa Mountain with the BRASOV sign offers a wonderful backdrop. I love having architecture and nature in the same shot.
5 Best Things To Do in Brasov
The most important attractions of Brasov are located in the city center or close to it. Therefore most of the highlights can be easily reached on foot by walking. In my opinion these are the top five attractions of the city.
1. Visit the Beautiful Piata Sfatului (Council Square)
Piata Sfatului is the heart of the city and has a lot going for it! This square with cobblestone features dates back to the Middle Ages. It’s a place bursting with history which you can feel at every sight. Here you can take in the medieval charm, admire the architecture and sit down for a meal.
2. Stroll down the Buzzing Republicii Street
This is the main pedestrian shopping street of the city and is located right by Piata Sfatului. Many of the buildings on this street are stunning and the shopping is fantastic. During summer, the middle of the street is lined with tables from the restaurants and cafes offering outdoor dining in the sun.
3. Admire the Architecture of the Black Church
The Black Church (Biserica Neagra) is also located near Piata Sfatului. It’s one of the main Gothic monuments of Romania. This building was partially damaged during an intense fire called the Great Fire of 1689. The church’s walls were blackened from the fire which is where the name comes from.
4. Enjoy the Views from the White & Black Towers
Turnul Alb (White Tower) and Turnul Negru (Black Tower) are medieval towers located only a short walk from the city centre. They are situated on a hill and are close to each other. Both of these towers offer great views over the red roofs of the historic centre, Black Church and Tampa Mountain.
5. Take the Cable Car up Tampa Mountain
The cable car up to the peak of Tampa Mountain takes you 960 metres above sea level. You can either take the cable car or hike up. From the cable car there is a short walk to the BRASOV sign which is similar to the famous Hollywood sign. Enjoy marvellous views over the city of Brasov.
Favourite Memory: Brasov Sign
My favorite memory from this trip was going to the famous BRASOV sign. Although I’ve been to Brasov a few times before, I never went up there. I really enjoyed the short ride with the cable car to the top of the mountain.
The sign can be seen from many parts of the city. It was great to see it up close and enjoy the views over the city centre. Another thing that made this entire trip special was that it was the first one I took with a new friend.
