My name is Lily and welcome to my article on Tabacon Thermal Resort and Spa in Costa Rica. I’m an engaged 27-year-old who lives in Long Beach, California. I’m getting married in 2022, so that’s an exciting prospect for me.
My fiance and I both love traveling and have come up with the goal of collecting as many foreign currencies (notes and coins) as possible. We made an agreement to visit at least one new place every year, preferably somewhere outside of the US. Collecting new currencies is our motivation!
We were inspired to visit Costa Rica because of their massive rainforests and to collect a few Costa Rican colon. I also wanted to see the waterfalls of this Central American country as a couple of my friends raved about how beautiful they were. So we ended up staying in Costa Rica for seven days. The places we visited were: Rio Celeste, La Fortuna Waterfall, Playa Manzanillo, Limon, Arenal Volcano and Tabacon Thermal Resort and Spa.
Day Trip to Tabacon Thermal Resort and Spa
I had seen photos of Tabacon Thermal Resort and Spa on Instagram but didn’t quite know where they were. In general, when I travel, hot springs are a must-do for me and so I had to visit Tabacon while traveling in Costa Rica. It was funny because when we arrived in the country, one of our planned activities was listed as a “natural hot spring” and I wondered if it was Tabacon. Of course, it was these springs and I was glad!
Tabacon was a one day activity for us. We paid for a day pass which was $85 USD per person. It included one meal of choice depending on the time you wanted to have breakfast, lunch or dinner. We got to Tabacon in time for lunch which was around noon. The people at the resort were very nice and helpful. They checked on us to see if we needed anything.
There were different hot springs for us to enjoy, all of which had differing temperatures. A bar could be found in the middle of one of the pools which offered drinks and food. The resort had clean towels for the guests as well as lockers for belongings. The bathrooms and changing rooms were huge!
Highlights of our Visit to Tabacon
My favorite part of Tabacon was definitely soaking and relaxing in the biggest hot spring pool of the resort and spa. It had a waterfall and a pool to hang out in. The pool was also surrounded by these amazing volcanic rocks and vegetation, which made the atmosphere super lush and relaxing.
Another favorite spot of mine was the bar in the middle of one of the pools. I had never seen a bar like this before and so it was a cool experience to have some drinks in the pool. My fiance and I also had a chance to relax in warm water while trying one of their signature cocktail drinks.
Where to Stay near Tabacon Thermal Resort and Spa
La Fortuna is the small town where Tabacon Thermal Resort and Spa is located and they have plenty of amazing things to do if you base yourself there. It’s a very common place to stay on the Costa Rica tourist trail.
As well as visiting Tabacon from La Fortuna, I also checked out Arenal Volcano which is the volcano that warms up the hot springs. La Fortuna Waterfall is another highlight from this town. It’s a waterfall that you hike down to but the effort is worth it! You won’t regret the hike as the views are amazing. Plus the hike is through the rainforest and if you’re lucky you will encounter some unique wildlife on the way down and back up.
Need to Know Before you Go
Some tips I can give for visiting Tabacon are to stay a night in the resort as that will give you the full experience. Also, if you are from the US, you don’t need to pay in colones (Costa Rican money). You can pay in US Dollars with your debit card which is much easier. If you only go for a day, make sure you take a bathing suit, sandals and extra clothes to change out of your wet clothes afterwards. Most importantly, have fun and try to relax!
