Greetings, fellow travellers. Recently, I’ve had the pleasure of spending a week on the magnificent island of Corfu. It was my first time there, but I collected memories that will definitely last. I’d like to share my experience first-hand and tell you the 5 things I can recommend for anyone planning a trip to Corfu.
1. Taking a boat trip to Paxos & Antipaxos
These are two islands near Corfu. Paxos is inhabited, while Antipaxos is almost entirely uninhabited. However, taking a boat tour around the islands is worth every penny. Seeing tall cliffs from the water and swimming inside caves is something you can rarely find, even in the Mediterranean region.
Besides, there are plenty of spots for snorkelling and wild, secluded beaches.
Paxos has Gaios, a cute little island town with taverns, bars and souvenir shops. Remember that you can rent a boat by yourself, even if you don’t have a license.
2. Renting a villa
Yes, there are plenty of hotels on the island, but Corfu offers excellent rates for even more upscale accommodations. There are quite a few villas to rent in Corfu, with the best ones probably situated on the island’s West Bank.
I stayed in the villa for 2 days on my trip, and I have one big regret. I wish I had stayed in Amberton Green villas a tad longer.
Spending the day exploring, returning to the villa and dipping in the infinity pool while sipping a cocktail and watching the sun set was peak vacation for me. Definitely recommend.
3. Renting a car or a scooter instead of going by bus
The public bus system is quite alright for travel between most tourist spots and the capital, Kerkyra – Corfu City. However, during peak tourist months, the buses and streets are more crowded, making public transport extremely prone to delays. Twice, I spent more than 40 minutes waiting for the bus under the scorching sun, which had temperatures over 30 degrees Celsius.
Only in the second part of the journey did the family and I rent a car, and that was the absolute best decision. It allowed much more freedom for planning and travel around the island.
4. Going on an olive oil or wine-tasting tour
Should I even add more?
Olives are part of the Greek and Mediterranean heritage. Wine is, too. Going on a tour like this could broaden your horizons and get you familiar with products we know in our daily lives.
5. Going near the airport and seeing planes fly over your head
Corfu Airport is unique. It has a single runway, and aircraft have to approach it from a low altitude. You can go near the airport and see how close the big birds really get. It’s a popular tourist attraction, feeling the plane wheeze over your hair.
