Welcome to our article on how to spend three days in Lake Como. We are Ludovica and Matteo – an Italian travel couple from Rome. Our dream is to be able to travel the world full time. We met early on in life and went to the same elementary and middle school but didn’t keep in touch afterwards.
Fifteen years later, Matteo saw me in a picture of a mutual friend on Facebook and sent me a friend request. Seeing that we both had a passion for travel we met again and got along immediately, even after all those years. We booked our first trip together after only three months of dating!
Soon after, we decided to do something about our passion. So we started taking photos and sharing our adventures on Instagram. What inspires us the most is the desire to discover and understand different cultures and connect with locals. There is nothing that makes us happier.
Three Lovely Days in Lake Como
Due to COVID-19 restrictions, travel outside of Europe wasn’t allowed for us Italians. We thought about what we could easily do and so we planned a road trip starting from Rome with Switzerland as the final destination.
Since Lake Como is on the way to Switzerland and we both had never visited, we thought this would be a great time to check out this region of Italy! We stayed for three days and we loved experiencing the lake on a taxi boat which gives you beautiful scenic views. It was like being in a fairytale.
Lake Como is the third largest lake in Italy and is located just over one hour away from Milan. From the lake shores you can take a boat to visit all the picturesque villages in the area and discover the most romantic villas. You can’t miss this destination when travelling through Italy for both its historic architecture and magical scenery which is unique in the world.
Best Things To Do in Lake Como
For those visiting Lake Como for three days or so we recommend staying in Varenna at a place called Albergo Milano. We loved the views from our room and the affordable prices were a bonus. Also, Varenna is less touristy than other towns in Lake Como which is great. This little comune stole our hearts because it’s a slice of heaven oozing peacefulness.
The people of Varenna live a slow paced lifestyle and of course we had the chance to meet some locals (which is easier because we are Italian). They were super friendly! So as well as experiencing this charming corner of Lake Como, we can recommend six more must-do experiences:
- Relax on the best beaches of Lake Como
- Taste the delicious Northern Italian cuisine
- Explore some other towns around the lake such as Bellagio
- Visit the historic villas such as Villa del Balbianello and Villa Monastero
- Say hello to the swans on the lake. We had the chance to be close to some beautiful swans and it was a special moment.
- Take a taxi boat ride because it’s the best way to navigate the lake and appreciate the breathtaking scenery that surrounds you!
Restaurants and Bars of Lake Como
Trying the cuisine of Lake Como was another highlight of our three day trip. The region has a variety of delicacies made with fresh lake fish, local wine, deli meats and cheeses. Some of the most famous local dishes are polenta and fresh fish. In terms of restaurants and bars, we would recommend eating at Osteria Quatro Pass, Lido di Ossuccio and Bar Il Molo.
Need to Know Before you Go
If you are travelling to Lake Como by car you will have to leave your vehicle in a parking lot outside the town you sleep. Take into consideration the extra fees you will have to pay at the parking lot or stay overnight in a place with private parking. Also, private taxi boats can get expensive. Sharing the boat ride with other travellers is a great idea to reduce the cost per person.
