Hi everyone! My name is Carita and welcome to my little guide on Ko Wai – a paradisiacal island located in the Koh Chang Archipelago. My boyfriend and I are frequent travelers and had been waiting to visit Thailand since the pandemic started. This winter, we finally had the opportunity to go. We have been to Thailand several times now and absolutely love the place!
Ko Wai is a destination we learned about from the Internet. We were looking for a quiet, peaceful Thai island and Ko Wai seemed to be just that. We took a speedboat from the Laem Ngop Pier and spent a total of five nights there. All of our time was spent relaxing, swimming and snorkeling.
Why Ko Wai is Heaven on Earth
The main appeal of the island is that it’s beautiful. The water is crystal clear and the sand is white. Ko Wai is also mostly covered in forest and therefore the electricity is sourced from generators during the evenings – making it a great spot to escape the crowds. Also, the snorkeling on the island is better than average. You can go snorkeling straight from your bungalow!
Staying in a bungalow on the beach was the highlight for us. It was cool to be able to wake up to the sound of the waves and go for a swim next to our accommodation. It’s notoriously difficult to find bungalows right on the beach for a decent price in Thailand, which means Ko Wai is a special offering in that regard. Being away from it all was such a tranquil feeling.
Staying at the Good Feeling Resort
We booked our stay at the Good Feeling Resort and felt like their bungalows were good value. The bungalows were far from the resorts and popular beaches, which was ideal. We also got a good discount by staying for five nights. Other resorts in Ko Wai had nice bungalows for a decent price too, so we recommend asking around and finding what fits you best.
How to Get to Ko Wai
Most people visit on a day trip from Koh Chang but you can get a direct speedboat to the island from the Laem Ngop Pier. The pier is easy to get to from Trat town by songthaew or taxi. From Bangkok, it’s around six or seven hours to Trat and from there you can take a songthaew or taxi to the pier. From the pier, it’s about a 45 minute speedboat to the island.
Need to Know Before You Go
I recommend visiting Trat. The town is small but has an interesting history, old Chinese shops and delicious food. It’s also affordable compared to many other places in Thailand. There are no shops, towns, ATMs, Internet or any infrastructure on Ko Wai – so remember to bring everything you need beforehand. Ko Wai isn’t too far from Koh Chang or the mainland, and therefore you can always visit them if you need to pick up something.
