Hi there! We are Drew and Alex (@itsdrewandalex). In this travel article we would love to share with you our experiences at the beautiful Huasteca Potosina in Mexico! But before we do so, allow us to introduce ourselves.
Drew grew up in the Miami, Florida area and Alex was born in Chicago but raised in Phoenix, Arizona. We met while studying at Arizona State University. We both had already traveled to Europe separately during summers off from school and both of us were passionate about travel. After we met, we decided to backpack through Thailand and Vietnam together.
It was during this trip that we fell in love with traveling together! Through our travels and YouTube, we aim to show people that travel is more accessible than they think and that the world is one. We are all humans, we share the same struggles and triumphs, and are all in this together.
Three Amazing Months in Mexico
Living in the US, Mexico has always been so polarized in the media. We honestly didn’t know much about Mexican culture other than what we had heard and we were very interested to find out what it is like for ourselves.
Needless to say we fell in love with Mexico and spent almost three months there. We traveled almost the entire country including Ciudad de Mexico, Guanajuato, San Miguel de Allende, Oaxaca and Chiapas.
We found out about Huasteca Potosina from a YouTuber! A content creator we regularly watch had visited the waterfall and oasis and it looked beautiful. So we knew at this moment that we had to visit for ourselves.
Our Experience at Huasteca Potosina
We spent two full days at Huasteca Potosina based out of Ciudad Valles and boy was it an adventure! There really isn’t that much information online about how to get to some of the waterfalls and other things without tours. Trying to find them ourselves was difficult but very rewarding.
We have a blog post about our time in Huasteca Potosina. You can check it out here. Our favorite waterfall was by far Cascada de Tamul. It was the biggest and most insane waterfall we have ever seen!
Cascada de Tamul was so special because we went by ourselves and that was such an adventure for us. We also have a YouTube video about some of the waterfalls in Huasteca Potosina on our channel: It’s Drew and Alex.
We didn’t have a huge amount of time at Huasteca Potosina so we only managed to see Cascada de Tamul, Cascada Minas Viejas, Cascade el Salto and a few other spots. They were all amazing. Who would have thought that there were waterfalls like this in the northeast of Mexico?!
Tips for your Visit to Huasteca Potosina
We stayed in Ciudad Valles and think that is the best place to base yourself while exploring Huasteca Potosina. Our accommodation was something we can’t give recommendations on as we booked an Airbnb and it ended up having bedbugs! We guess surprises like that are just part of travel.
The number one thing to know before you go is that a car is ideal. Although it’s not 100% necessary, it will make getting around so much easier. Also, give yourself enough time to see everything you want. We had two full days and it wasn’t enough time. Plan for at least three days.
We would like to leave you with our favorite memory from Huasteca Potosina. When we visited Cascada de Tamul, we had to park far from the waterfall and ended up hitch hiking. It was our first experience hitch hiking and it was incredible. We recommend hitch hiking there if you have never done it before. You will meet incredible people and hear amazing stories!
