Fiji Islands are one of the most beautiful places I have ever been. It is an incredible place, very different to other places in the world. It is a place in which there are many small islands where the people live close to nature, far away from all technological things.
I grew up in Rome where the ancient history and culture had a major influence on me growing up.
Ancient monuments like the Colosseum and Roman Forum, Medieval and Renaissance churches, beautiful fountains and Squares well-known all around the world.
But in Fiji it is completely different, riding by boat through all the islands is an awesome experience: small villages/communities, unusual birds, a silent and absolutely mellow lifestyle!

Before going to the Fiji islands, I spent many days reading information aswell about history, culture, weather, tradition, must-see places. I think that it is very important to know as much info as possible about a country before arriving. Many years ago I used to buy travel books about a destination, but these days Google search and social media provide so much info.
We were in Fiji in August and the weather was beautiful with blue skies, little rain and low humidity. Fiji is a perfect destination all year round, but I think the best period is between May/June to September/October, when the weather is perfect.

The atmosphere of the Fiji islands was relaxed and friendly. When you arrive in Fiji, everybody says “Bula Bula” and you will hear “Bula Bula” over and over again during your journey. “Bula” is the Fijian word to say “hello”, “welcome” but it is not just a greeting. Bula represents the Fijian spirit of hospitality, joy and happiness.

Fiji really is a paradise! The Fiji Islands are the best place for sunsets, especially on the southern coast of the main island, Vitu Levu. Believe me! I have seen the best sunsets in all my life in this place. The sky colours move from yellow, orange, red to pink and violet. In Yasawa islands I found one of my favourite beaches in the world. Nanuya Lailai, which was also the location for the famous film “The Blue Lagoon”, with Brooke Shields and Christopher Atkins.

We saw so many incredible places, beautiful beaches and clear water, palm trees… a perfect paradise! Particularly I loved the blue starfish in Mana Island (the Mamanucas islands). Even if there are many species of starfish and this species is relatively common, it was the first time that I saw a blue starfish and it was a stunning experience. I would like to remind you that everyone needs to understand the importance of not touching and not removing starfish from the sea.

Suva is the capital and the most populous city of Fiji. It is on Viti Levu island, the largest island in the Fijian archipelago. In Suva you can find many typical markets. In the Municipal market you’ll find every tropical fruit and vegetable imaginable and also a very friendly and festive atmosphere everyday. Closed to the Municipal market you’ll find the handcraft market where it is possible to purchase Fijian and Island artefacts and handicrafts at a reasonable price. Don’t be afraid to ask for a discount!

Fiji offers not only beaches and sunsets, but also the chance to visit local villages, where it is possible to find out about how Fijian people live. We decided to visit the Navala Village, independently. It was a long way to reach Navala Village (almost three hours by car north-west of Nadi) because the street is partially unpaved. In this mountain village, people live in traditional bures; a very simple life. When we arrived at the Navala Village a lady decided to be our guide around the village. She drove us around the village and introduced us to the Chief of the Village.

Fiji has a rich culture and natural beauty, the experience is something I will treasure for a long time. Remember how fortunate we are to have so much information available to us these days, & I hope my experience enriches your journey.
