Have you ever dreamed of sailing across crystal-clear waters, feeling the wind in your hair, and experiencing the freedom of the open sea but never stepped foot on a yacht before? At Go Sail Virgin Islands, we believe it’s never too late to embark on your sailing journey. Our mission is to celebrate late-blooming sailors who discover their passion for yachting later in life, proving that age is just a number when it comes to embracing new adventures.

The Joy of Late-Blooming Sailors
Meet Todd Fererder, who in his early 50’s close to retiring began looking for post-retirement plans and decided to take the leap and find his sea legs with Go Sail Virgin Islands. He was first introduced to sailing by his wife’s friend, “I immediately fell in love with the quietness, the getting away from the craziness of the world,” he said. “I didn’t expect to like it as much as I did…I started thinking, why don’t I start pursuing my sailing certification as I get closer to retirement.” Todd’s story is not unique. Frankie Olivieri, a true go-getter, decided to become a sailor at 60 years old, only minutes into his first steps on a sailboat, adds, “So I booked a trip with Genevieve, ever since then it’s been magical!”
Mark Gottlieb, another retiree turned sailing enthusiast, shares, “Just this year I made it a priority to do ASA courses.” With Go Sail Virgin Islands, Marc stepped aboard his first catamaran. “It felt like a lot of growth happening in just a few days and each day felt pleasantly long but not overdone and there was something to be learned throughout the day,” he explained. “[Captain] JT brings a lot of experience and is an effective teacher. He did a good job of reinforcing the bookwork in real-life ways.”
A Community Without Borders
One of the most beautiful aspects of sailing is the vibrant, inclusive community it fosters. The sailing world is vast, yet intimately connected. From yacht clubs to race fleets, and Caribbean cruising networks to world cruising circles, there’s a place for everyone.
“The sailing community embraces the young and old alike,” says Captain Genevieve, founder of Go Sail Virgin Islands. “In our group classes, you’ll often find 10-year-olds learning alongside 70-year-olds, all sharing the same passion.” This unique dynamic creates an environment where age truly becomes irrelevant, and lifelong friendships are forged through shared experiences on the water.
Websites like Noonsite have become hubs for sailors to connect and share information. Social media groups and newsletters keep the community tight-knit, even when miles apart. As the saying goes in the sailing world, “You can hardly anchor in a harbor without finding a friend or at least a common interest.”

Health Benefits, More Than Just a Hobby
Sailing isn’t just an exciting pastime; it’s a lifestyle that offers numerous physical and mental health benefits. The physical demands of handling sails and navigating a boat provide a full body workout, improving strength, flexibility, and cardiovascular health.
But the benefits go beyond the physical. “I just really love the idea of being able to cruise—going to a destination and sleeping on a boat,” shares Zander, previously an occasional sailing hobbyist turned enthusiast after his cancer diagnosis. “During chemo, as all these priorities shifted for me, I thought about what I really like to do. It’s always been being on the water. I was caught up in the grind and the monotony of life. This was kind of a blessing— it shocked me into realizing I really need to go after these dreams.”
Indeed, sailing offers a unique opportunity to disconnect from our screen-dominated lives and reconnect with the present moment. The fresh sea air, the rhythmic waves, and the smooth feeling of guiding the helm create an immersive experience that enhances mindfulness and reduces stress.
“If it didn’t [happen], I would be stuck not appreciating life. Not doing things that make me happy,” shared Zander. “I was basically not very happy before all this happened. It has put me in a position where I can be more happy.”
An immersive day sailing offers a connection to nature, and how one can interact with it. Cognitive functions improve with constant problem-solving, and this action assists in staying young in body, heart and mind.

Debunking the Myths: Sailing is for Everyone
One common misconception about sailing is that it’s an expensive hobby reserved for the elite. At Go Sail Virgin Islands, we’re passionate about making sailing accessible to everyone. “Sailing is truly for everyone,” insists Captain Genevieve. “There are hundreds of sailing schools all over the world, and you’d be surprised how affordable many options are.”
From community sailing programs to shared boat ownership schemes, there are numerous ways to get involved in sailing without breaking the bank. Many experienced sailors are also eager to take on crew members, providing another avenue for newcomers to gain experience.
A Journey of Continuous Growth
Embracing sailing later in life brings its own unique advantages. With age comes wisdom, patience, and a readiness to fully embrace the challenges and rewards of the sea. Captain Genevieve often shares, “No one was born a master sailor of all oceans. We are all teachers and students in this journey.”
Sailing creates a sense of self-reliance that grows with focused intentions. It teaches us that life is not short on mishaps or challenges, but strength is born from how we choose to face them. “Wisdom comes from experience, but you must start somewhere,” reminds Captain Genevieve. “There’s nothing better than the success of a journey where it was hard, but you pressed on anyway.”
At Go Sail Virgin Islands, we believe that sailing is more than just a skill – it’s a transformative experience that can enrich your life at any age. Whether you’re 10 or 75, the sea is calling. Are you ready to answer?
